The expansive universe within The Conjuring franchise is broad, with tons of characters that interconnect within a number of films, including making connections between movies like The Nun and Annabelle. This is typical, as all the movies tie back to one of the Conjuring films. The Curse of La Llorona had a tie-in with Father Perez aiding the families in both this movie and the first Annabelle. Annabelle herself can also be seen a few times in the first Conjuring film. The two The Nun movies also had connections to The Conjuring and the Annabelle sequels.

When watching The Conjuring movies in order, audiences see that Valak, the demon nun, is the main antagonist of The Conjuring 2 and The Nun. While Annabelle and The Nun don’t have a ton of direct connections to one another, there are several Easter eggs and theories that make audiences believe that maybe these two spin-off films have more to do with each other than meets the eye. These are things that connect both those two movies and also help connect them with the main Conjuring movies as well.

11 The St. Lucy Connection

Sister Irene And Lorraine Warren Share A Bloodline

Close

While it doesn’t necessarily match up with The Nun and Annabelle specifically, The Nun 2‘s big twist connects Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren. There has always been the question of how these two characters could connect. The two movies cast sisters to play the two characters, so it was clear there was some connection planned. Some early guesses had people thinking that Sister Irene and Lorraine were the same person, but the timelines didn’t really line up, nor did the fact that Irene became a nun around the same time that Lorraine fell in love with Ed Warren. There were others who thought they were sisters.

Neither of those guesses was true, and the true link was revealed in The Nun 2. Instead, Sister Irene had visions that showed her she was related to St. Lucy, someone whom Valek had been killing the descendants of for years to retrieve the eyes of the holy power that could stop the demon. She also had a vision of other descendants of St. Lucy — one of which was Lorraine Warren. This means that Sister Irene and Lorraine were part of the same bloodline, which explains why Valek was one of the demons tormenting Lorraine, on top of others like Annabelle.

10 Prominent Demons In The Universe Targeting The Warrens

Valak And Malthus Are Both Powerful Entities In The Lore Of The Conjuring

Close

Fans have seen a number of poltergeists and spirits within The Conjuring universe, including La Llorona, The Crooked Man, and Bathsheba, to name a few. But none of these creatures are ever said to be actual demons. Only Valak and Malthus, the entity who grips Annabelle, are considered demons, and they have made an appearance in every Annabelle film.

Both Valak and Annabelle’s demon Malthus seem to have it out for the Warrens, and they are the scariest entities in The Conjuring franchise. Valak targets Ed and Lorraine and follows Lorraine from the United States to England in The Conjuring 2. Malthus, acting through Annabelle, goes after Judy Warren in Annabelle Comes Home. Not only are both beings incredibly powerful, but they have both taken the Warrens disrupting their plans personally, and now seem to have a grudge against the entire Warren Family

9 The Annabelle: Creation End Credit Scene

Close

Though the Nun never makes an actual appearance in the Annabelle films, and Annabelle doesn’t make an appearance in The Nun, there is a post-credit scene at the end of Annabelle: Creation that alludes to Valak’s stand-alone film. The end credits scene of the Annabelle prequel shows a dark hallway in what appears to be an old cathedral.

This short moment was one of the first teases in The Conjuring franchise that Valak was due their own dedicated film just like Annabelle, and one of the most direct links between the two.

The hallway is almost too dark to make anything out, but it’s possible to see a figure of the nun walking closer and closer, with each candle extinguishing as the demon walks past them towards the camera. The scene goes black and the credits continue. This short moment was one of the first teases in The Conjuring franchise that Valak was due their own dedicated film just like Annabelle, and one of the most direct links between the two.

8 Sister Charlotte Is Connected To Valak

Valak Is Visible Behind The Nun In Annabelle: Creation

Close

This The Nun and Annabelle connection may take a rewatch or two to understand, but Sister Charlotte from Annabelle: Creation is tied to The Nun. The character looks at an old picture of herself at a convent in Romania with three other nuns. While this is a real “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” moment, it shows that Valak has been tormenting members of convents across the world with much more dedication than is glimpsed in The Nun movies.

In Annabelle: Creation, Valak is visible behind the trio of Romanian nuns and Sister Charlotte, standing in the shadows and watching over them. The wider Conjuring franchise poorly explains the connections and never refers to Sister Charlotte again. However, this subtle tease goes a long way in both fleshing out the connectivity between the various strands of The Conjurverse, and also plays into the idea that certain individuals are more susceptible to supernatural entities (with a theory being that the presence of Valak earlier in Sister Charlotte’s life hints that it’s easy for demons, like Annabelle’s Malthus, to target her).

7 The Nun Timeline

Everyone In Sister Charlotte’s Photograph Should Be Dead

Close

The Nun takes place exactly three years before Sister Charlotte and the girls arrive at the Mullins’ farm in Annabelle: Creation. In The Nun, Valak kills everyone at the Romanian convent, and there are no survivors. This means that everyone in Sister Charlotte’s photograph should be dead, including her.

Instead, SIster Charlotte is still alive and lives across the world, perfectly fine and taking care of orphaned girls. It’s clear that Sister Charlotte was at the convent when Valak first began to haunt them, as evidenced from his appearance in the picture. Many fans have wondered how Sister Charlotte survived. This could have been hinting at a potential idea to link the Annabelle and The Nun movies that simply never came to pass, but it’s spawned many theories, such as Valak purposefully leaving Sister Charlotte alive knowing Malthus needed someone to torment.

6 The Demons Malthus and Valak Are Cooperating

Valak May Have Wanted Free Annabelle’s Demon Malthus

Close

Sister Charlotte surviving Vlak’s haunting of the convent in Romania does lead to a somewhat plausible idea that Valak and Malthus are working in tandem. There is a fan theory from Reddit that suggests that Sister Charlotte is actually possessed by Valak, and she appears in Annabelle: Creation to free Malthus. The Redditor lists the reasons why this theory makes sense and even goes as far as to argue against reasons why it may not make sense.

The Annabelle doll housing Malthus being trapped in The Warren’s vault could also be a reason why Valak continues to target them.

Charlotte is never seen in The Nun but, because of the photo, fans know she was there at some point while Valak was active. The Reddit post suggests that Valak simply wanted to set Annabelle’s demon, Malthus, free into the world. After the events of Creation, he terrorizes the two families from the first film and then the Warrens themselves in Annabelle Comes Home because of the St. Lucy connection. While it’s never confirmed, the Annabelle doll housing Malthus being trapped in The Warren’s vault could also be a reason why Valak continues to target them.

5 The Same Photograph Hanging In The Convent

The Photograph Is Seen On The Wall For A Brief Moment

Close

There are many hidden details fans missed in The Nun. In the 2018 The Conjuring spinoff, the same photograph owned by Sister Charlotte in Annabell: Creation can actually be seen hanging on the wall for a brief moment. However, Charlotte doesn’t appear in the film, and neither does Sisters Marie, Anna, nor Lucia. It’s noted that they were there during the year that The Nun takes place, so it’s strange that they are never mentioned again or seen.

It is also noted that Sister Charlotte didn’t remember that Valak was in the photo with them, or never noticed it before. It seems odd that she wouldn’t notice a demon or even a fourth person standing behind her and her friends in a photo — which itself feeds into the idea that Sister Charlotte was possessed by Valak, or that he was using her as some kind of conduit and somehow ensured she didn’t notice his presence int he photo.

4 Demonic Attachment To Sister Charlotte’s Photograph

The Nun Managed To Travel From The Convent To The Warrens’ Home

Close

There is another theory linking The Nun and Annabelle movies to one-another, as well as to the wider The Conjuring universe, that The Nun somehow managed to travel from the convent to the Warrens’ home through Sister Charlotte’s photograph. After all, Valak is a demon, and demons are known to have the ability to attach to items in The Conjuring universe, so this would make sense.

It’s entirely possible that Valak attached itself to the photo Sister Charlotte had, and then possibly even later to Annabelle as well. As a connection between The Nun and Annabelle, this could explain why Valak could maybe only be seen in certain angles of the photo and why he wasn’t noticed. It would also explain why the Annabelle doll was so especially dangerous — being possessed by Malthus and having Valak attached to it brings the presence of two demons to where the doll is kept.

3 The Warren Family Connection

Valak Was Able To Latch Onto Lorraine Warren

Close

Annabelle is one of the scariest paranormal villains, and the rest of The Conjuring franchise has many creepy figures. It’s possible that once the Warren couple has the Annabelle doll, they lock her away, which leads to the events of Annabelle Comes Home. But before they did this, Valak was able to latch onto Lorraine Warren, which would explain why she keeps seeing the nun throughout the second Conjuring film. It is implied that Valak and Lorraine met while she and her husband aided in the exorcism of Frenchy (who had been possessed by Valak).

Sister Irene from The Nun is a descendant of St. Lucy, as is Lorraine Warren, and this family connection is why Valak wants both of them dead.

However, in The Nun 2, the truth was revealed. Valak is a fallen angel who wants to find power again and requires a specific relic to make this happen. Valak saw the death of St. Lucy, centuries in the past, and knows that the Eyes of St. Lucy could provide that power. Sister Irene from The Nun is a descendant of St. Lucy, as is Lorraine Warren, and this family connection is why Valak wants both of them dead.

2 Taissa And Vera Farmiga Star In The Franchise

Sister Irene Appears To Be A Clairvoyant Like Lorraine

Taissa Farmiga in The Nun

Vera Farmiga is the star of The Conjuring Universe, though she’s not the only member fo the Farmiga family to appear in the franshie. Vera Farmiga plays Lorraine Warren in all the films, which are partially based on the real-life exploits of the Warren couple. It’s interesting to note is that the protagonist of The Nun, Sister Irene, who also appears to be a clairvoyant like Lorraine, is Taissa Farmiga, Vera’s younger sister.

This wasn’t just a coincidence. After The Nun 2, director Michael Chaves said it was always in the plans to have them related in some way. That ended up as them both being descendants of St. Lucy.

“I mean, I think from the beginning it was too much of a coincidence to have nearly identical sisters in the same movie. I think it was always part of the ultimate goal is to tie them in and I think that there’s always been a connection. There’s clues even in the very first ‘Nun’ movie if you look at it […] people have picked out a connection before and so the idea of bloodline has already been in there.”

1 Ouroboros Imagery

Valak Is Associated With Snakes

Close

One Easter egg worth mentioning concerning The Nun and Annabelle connections is some incredibly specific imagery that arises when Mia decides to research the demon possessing Annabelle in the first The Conjuring movie. While studying up on occult figures, demons, and other supernatural entitites, Mia stumbles upon a page with a snake eating its own tail.

This symbol is known as an Ouroboros, and its presence is no coincidence, as it’s a clear not to The Nun‘s Valak. Valak is highly associated with snakes in The Conjuring, so the ouroboros becomes a repeated symbol for Valak throughout the films. It appears again next to the nun a few times in The Conjuring 2, and The Nun, and this is another way that Annabelle is connected to The Nun.
