As fun as it is to watch Harry and Lloyd’s shenanigans, it doesn’t seem realistic that these comedy movie characters could actually function in the real world. This becomes apparent within the first few minutes of Dumb and Dumber when Harry and Lloyd both lose their jobs and start searching for new ones, suggesting they bounce from job to job quite regularly. It is not just that they are incompetent, but also that they don’t seem to have any motivation to work.
After returning from a day of job-hunting, Harry complains that there are no jobs available anywhere with Lloyd scoffing at the idea that 40 hours a week is not a reasonable request. While the rest of the Dumb and Dumber franchise has been a disappointment, this line suggests it might have been best to make Harry and Lloyd’s adventures into a series, following them from job to job similar to the Three Stooges.

The woman lets Lloyd know that she is from Austria, leading him to launch into an exaggerated impression of someone with an Australian accent.
It is a hilarious introduction to Lloyd and his disconnected place in the world. Watching him commit so much to the accent without thinking for a moment that he is off base is a lot of fun to watch. While it is not surprising that the Austrian woman is unimpressed with Lloyd’s attempts to flirt, it is likely she would have been even less impressed if she actually was from Australia.

While Mary is taken aback, Harry was actually talking about a pair of owls she was looking at in a cage.
Harry often seems like the more innocent of the two main characters and this scene demonstrates it. The audience might initially respond with shocked laughter and turn on Harry for such a vulgar comment to a complete stranger. However, there is a moment of hilarious relief when it becomes clear what he is actually talking about. If it were another character, it might seem like they were trying to get away with making a lewd comment. However, since it is Harry, it is easy to accept that he really didn’t see the problem with his word choice.

After going their separate ways following Lloyd getting them lost, he comes by to pick up Harry on a small motorcycle he got after trading in their van. In light of this ridiculous trade, for the first time, it actually feels like Harry is about to lose his temper with Lloyd.
He sets the moment up as if he is getting ready to lay into Lloyd for making such a foolish decision. However, Harry then finishes it by saying:

you go and do something like this… and totally redeem yourself!”
It is a big laugh in the movie and also shows that these two are meant for each other. Harry might seem more clued in at times, but that only helps to sell the moment of him not recognizing that Lloyd went from one dumb move to another. Going off of Mary’s upper-class vibe, he suggests she will greet them as if she were a proper English lady, not realizing that he’s made some mistakes in his imagination of the reunion. A strumpet is a female prostitute, which is a far cry from his intended cultural reference regarding the inviting of guests in for tea and crumpets, where the original saying came from. Much like the Austrian confusion, it proves that Lloyd is always sure he has a great one-liner, even when he has no clue what he is talking about.
7 “We Got No Food! We Got No Jobs! Our Pet’s Heads Are Fallin’ Off!!”

Given all the hijinks of the movie, fans might forget that Dumb and Dumber adds a crime story element. After Lloyd grabs Mary’s ransom money, he and Harry become embroiled in the conspiracy in a hilarious case of mistaken identity which is made even funnier when they continue not to realize it. After a couple of goons break into their apartment, they decide to send a little warning to Harry and Lloyd by cutting off their pet bird’s head.
The gruesome moment makes for one of the funniest moments as the death of the bird proves to be the last straw in Lloyd’s particularly bad day. Going on a rant about all the things that are going wrong with their life, Jim Carrey delivers the final point of their pets suddenly becoming decapitated for no reason with such unhinged frustration that it makes for a terrific moment of dark humor.
6 “Yeah, He Was Pretty Old.”

While tearing the head off of their pet bird was supposed to serve as a message to Harry and Lloyd, the thugs who did this terrible crime didn’t count on the friends being too dim to get the message. When Lloyd returns home, Harry sadly tells him about the death of their bird and simply explains that his head fell off.
When Lloyd is shocked by this news, Harry explains that it was a pretty old bird as if age has anything to do with heads suddenly falling off. Seeing Harry so sad about the loss of his pet is hilariously juxtaposed with him saying something so clueless. It is hilarious to think of how Harry and Lloyd might react to the infamous horse head scene in The Godfather and how even a bloody message like that would likely be lost on the two.
