The best Dumb and Dumber quotes still have fans laughing nearly 30 years after it was first released. When Dumb and Dumber hit the big screen, it changed the comedy world with a silly story of misadventures and a strangely endearing friendship. Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) embarked on a quest with his best friend Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) in search of true love. Audiences loved director Peter Farrelly’s celebration of two guys lacking in brain matter while embracing the spirit of adventure. It also gave rise to some timeless Dumb and Dumber quotes that inspired so many memes.

The movie saw Jim Carrey at the height of his popularity in the 1990s and added in a normally straight man actor in Jeff Daniels to ham it up throughout the running time. While Dumb and Dumber had a prequel and a sequel, neither came close to the brilliance of the original, which launched the Farrelly brothers into comedy movie superstardom. Even the brothers, who went on to make movies like There’s Something About Mary and Me, Myself & Irene, couldn’t reach the level of hilarious quotes that their debut movie delivered in its 106-minute running time.

25 “Man, You Are One Pathetic Loser.”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas sitting in a chair and laughing as Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber

An aspect of Lloyd’s character that becomes the source of a lot of the movie’s funniest moments is the fact that he has an elevated image of himself. He doesn’t know how dumb he is and actually sees himself as an impressive person. He even sees himself as better than Harry, despite seemingly being the dimmer of the two friends.

At the beginning of the movie, the two men return home and commiserate about their respective bad days. After Lloyd reveals he was fired for leaving the scene of an accident, Harry also reveals he was fired. Seemingly forgetting that he just lost his job too, Lloyd mocks his best friend as pathetic, unintentionally insulting himself in the process. The gleefulness with how Carrey delivers the line suggests that Lloyd doesn’t get a lot of opportunities to feel superior to others, even if he is just as pathetic in this case.

24 “No, I Was Just Shaving.”

Harry (Jeff Daniels)

Jeff Daniels as Harry, yelling on the toilet in Dumb and Dumber

Jeff Daniels’ bathroom scene in Dumb and Dumber helped cement the actor as a worthy comedy partner to stand next to Jim Carrey in this movie. The scene unfolds like a hilarious horror movie with Harry going over to Mary’s house, not knowing that a vengeful Lloyd spiked his tea with a laxative. The moment of Harry sitting on the toilet and dealing with the explosive bowel movement is funny enough. However, when Mary knocks on the door and warns him not to use thetoilet because it is broken, the scene becomes a classic.

Harry’s panicked reaction to this revelation is to explain that he is just shaving, as if shaving in a stranger’s home is normal. As Mary keeps coming back to check on him, he continues to throw out ridiculous excuses as he deals with his messy dilemma. It is an unforgettable moment in the movie that is only added to by how poorly Harry handles the embarrassing scenario.

23 “Maybe You Should Wear These Extra Gloves. My Hands Are Starting To Get Sweaty.”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) standing out in the cold at night in Dumb and Dumber

While Harry and Lloyd might be one of the best movie friendships of all time, some of Dumb and Dumber‘s funniest moments are when the two are fighting. After making it to Aspen, the duo fails to find Mary and are stuck out in the freezing cold with nowhere to go. As Harry complains that his bare hands have lost all feeling because they are frozen, Lloyd takes off his extra pair of gloves and offers them to his friend.

Harry starts strangling Lloyd and Lloyd complains, ”
Harry, your hands are freezing!

This is another sign of Harry being the smarter of the two by at least a little bit as Lloyd cannot understand how he was being selfish. The scene results in the two getting into an actual fight with it being topped off by the pitch-perfect punchline when Harry starts strangling Lloyd and Lloyd complains, “Harry, your hands are freezing!” Even at that moment, it doesn’t seem as if Lloyd has clued into why his friend would be so angry at him.

22 “One Time We Successfully Mated A Bulldog With A Shih-Tzu.”

Harry (Jeff Daniels)

Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas and Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne in suits looking shocked in Dumb and Dumber

The casting idea of Nicolas Cage as Harry in Dumb and Dumber is certainly interesting but there is no denying that Jeff Daniels is perfect for the role of Harry Dunne. Whereas Jim Carrey’s Lloyd Christmas is a loud dimwit, Harry is more of a buffoonish manchild which can be almost charismatic at times. There is a certain charm to him that is likely unintentional, but it makes him an easy person for strangers, especially women, to talk to.

When first meeting Mary Swanson, the two start talking about dogs and Harry reveals the unusual breeding he did with a bulldog and a shih-tzu and that they called it a “bull-s***.” The way Harry laughs and takes such glee in his own stupid joke is what makes it such a funny moment. It is as if he didn’t even care that he was talking to a beautiful woman and was simply excited that he got to deliver such a good punchline.

21 “Hey, You Wanna Hear The Most Annoying Sound In The World?”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) driving their van with Joe Mentalino (Mike Starr) sitting between them in Dumb & Dumber.

While Joe Mentalino (Mike Starr) hitches a ride with Harry and Lloyd, he knows he’s in for a ride with a pair of dumb individuals. However, he may have underestimated just how dumb these two are. For example, at one point, Lloyd asks Joe, “Hey, you wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?” Now, thanks to Lloyd, viewers can still hear to this day the occasional “EEEEEEEEEEE!” screech.

The sheer randomness of the moment has made it one of the most famous and popular scenes in the movie. It immediately becomes clear that this is something Harry and Lloyd have done in the past, somehow taking a lot of joy in being able to be severely annoying. The fact that Joe is there to kill these two and he has to put up with them like he is a father on a road trip with his hyper children is a hilarious scenario.

20 “Why Don’t You Eat Up And We’ll Tell Ya.”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas, laughing in Dumb and Dumber

As if the experience of sharing a ride with Harry and Lloyd wasn’t bad enough, Joe is also forced to share a meal with the two childish men. Joe gets some small relief from the two when he dares them both to eat some hot peppers, taking glee in how in pain they are as a result. However, this proves to be his undoing when Joe goes to make a phone call and Harry and Lloyd decide to sneak some of those peppers into his burger as a prank.

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels perfectly portray excited children as they try to maintain a straight face while bursting with giddy anticipation. Carrey pressuring Joe to take a bite of his burger while stifling a laugh is one of the funniest moments. It is so obvious, in fact, that it is a surprise Joe didn’t pick up on their obvious antics, which would have saved his life as the peppers caused the hitman’s ulcer to flare up, leading to his death.

19 “Unless You Wanna Work 40 Hours A Week.”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Lloyd (Jim Carrey) smiling and Harry (Jeff Daniels) looking confused in Dumb and Dumber

As fun as it is to watch Harry and Lloyd’s shenanigans, it doesn’t seem realistic that these comedy movie characters could actually function in the real world. This becomes apparent within the first few minutes of Dumb and Dumber when Harry and Lloyd both lose their jobs and start searching for new ones, suggesting they bounce from job to job quite regularly. It is not just that they are incompetent, but also that they don’t seem to have any motivation to work.

After returning from a day of job-hunting, Harry complains that there are no jobs available anywhere with Lloyd scoffing at the idea that 40 hours a week is not a reasonable request. While the rest of the Dumb and Dumber franchise has been a disappointment, this line suggests it might have been best to make Harry and Lloyd’s adventures into a series, following them from job to job similar to the Three Stooges.

18 “According To The Map, We’ve Only Gone 4 Inches!”

Harry (Jeff Daniels)

A shot of Harry and Lloyd's van driving down a road in Dumb & Dumber.

While Harry and Lloyd can turn just about every situation into a hilarious disaster, it is especially fun watching them attempt to navigate the challenges of a road trip, especially in the era before GPS apps. Harry makes this wacky comment about a physical map while the duo drives. What’s surprising about Harry’s ridiculous comment isn’t the fact he has no clue the map’s measurements are scaled down; it’s that he doesn’t have any semblance of an idea about how to use a map.

While people born after 2000 have likely never used a real map, this remains one of the best Dumb and Dumber quotes because Harry takes it that one step further in his ignorance. It is embarrassing that Harry made such a mistake, but the fact that Lloyd did not think twice about the statement shows that these friends truly are two of a kind.

17 “I’m Going To Hang By The Bar. Put Out The Vibe!”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) by the bar in Dumb & Dumber.

When thinking of male heartthrobs from the ’90s, most people likely think of Brad Pitt, John Stamos, or George Clooney. However, there is one who thinks he stands above the rest — Lloyd Christmas. Despite a lot of evidence to the contrary, Lloyd sees himself as a real catch for women and assumes that there is a lot more interest out there for him than there actually is. When at a fancy party, Lloyd decides his best way to woo Mary Swanson is by simply hanging back and letting her come to him.

It is a completely oblivious moment for the awkward gentleman. It is made even funnier by the fact that he is unaware of what kind of vibe he might be putting out with his bright orange suit. However, it is also hilarious in how it gives some possible insight into Lloyd’s insecurities. It could be that he was only putting on a show of confidence to avoid having to actually go talk to Mary.

Lloyd’s chipped tooth in the movie is real, the result of a schoolyard fight when Jim Carrey was younger.

16 “Why Are You Going To The Airport? Flying Somewhere?”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) dressed up as a driver in Dumb & Dumber.

Dumb and Dumber remains one of Jim Carrey’s best movies and finest performances because of how much he commits to Lloyd’s oblivious nature. When Lloyd was working as a limo driver, he became smitten with his new client, Mary Swanson, and dropped this hilarious icebreaker. It is not just out of his own awkwardness that he asks the question, but rather that he genuinely thought this was a worthwhile way to strike up the conversation.

Not only was he oblivious to the silliness of the question, but he also failed to notice that Mary was unimpressed with it. While she tried to keep up a friendly tone, she asked somewhat sarcastically how he was able to come to that conclusion. Lloyd carried on embarrassing himself by saying:

Well, I saw your luggage. Then when I noticed the airline ticket I put two and two together.

The self-assured way he said it, as if it was the most perceptive thing he could pick up on, adds to the hilarious exchange.

15 “Fell Off The Jet Way Again.”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Lloyd (Jim Carrey) hugs Mary (Lauren Holly) in Dumb and Dumber

The early sequence of Lloyd dropping Mary off at the airport is one of the many Dumb and Dumber scenes that remain iconic. Unaware that Mary is making a ransom drop, Lloyd sees her leave one of her bags behind and decides it is the perfect way for him to be a hero in her eyes, grabbing the bag and chasing after her. It culminates with the hilarious image of Lloyd heroically running down the jetway to deliver Mary’s briefcase only for the plane to already be gone and Lloyd to fall out onto the runway.

As funny as it is, it may not be an unusual occurrence for Lloyd. When Harry asks how his day was, Lloyd tells him what happened, suggesting that it has happened at least once before. It is a subtle line among the more obvious jokes in the movie, but hilarious to consider. The way Lloyd details the mishap as if he forgot to pack his lunch is added to by the fact that Harry isn’t at all surprised to hear it.

14 “Austria! Well Then..’G’day, Mate! Let’s Put Another Shrimp On The Barbie!'”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Lloyd (Jim Carrey) sticking his head out of a limosine window in Dumb & Dumber.

Much of the movie is about Lloyd’s search for love so it makes sense that his first scene in the movie showed him trying his pickup lines on a woman. Lloyd pulls up beside a beautiful stranger waiting for a bus and strikes up this conversation. It begins poorly for Lloyd as he compliments the woman’s alluring accent and guesses it is from New Jersey. Somehow, it only gets worse from there. The woman lets Lloyd know that she is from Austria, leading him to launch into an exaggerated impression of someone with an Australian accent.

It is a hilarious introduction to Lloyd and his disconnected place in the world. Watching him commit so much to the accent without thinking for a moment that he is off base is a lot of fun to watch. While it is not surprising that the Austrian woman is unimpressed with Lloyd’s attempts to flirt, it is likely she would have been even less impressed if she actually was from Australia.

13 “Nice Set Of Hooters You Got There.”

Harry (Jeff Daniels)

Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) talking to Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly) in Dumb & Dumber.

While Lloyd is the kind of person who thinks he can “vibe” by the bar and the women will come to him, Harry is a lot less secure in his willingness to approach the opposite sex. When Mary (Lauren Holly) is standing alone, Harry walks up and delivers this shocking opening line but in a completely innocent manner. While Mary is taken aback, Harry was actually talking about a pair of owls she was looking at in a cage.

Harry often seems like the more innocent of the two main characters and this scene demonstrates it. The audience might initially respond with shocked laughter and turn on Harry for such a vulgar comment to a complete stranger. However, there is a moment of hilarious relief when it becomes clear what he is actually talking about. If it were another character, it might seem like they were trying to get away with making a lewd comment. However, since it is Harry, it is easy to accept that he really didn’t see the problem with his word choice.

12 “No, It’s A Cardigan But Thanks For Noticing.”

Harry (Jeff Daniels)

A police officer with a helmet riding next to a scared-looking Harry (Jeff Daniels) in Dumb and Dumber

The first half of Dumb and Dumber is one of the great road trip comedies that allows for endless hijinks with Harry and Lloyd on the open road. As with most road trip comedies, there is a scene with the duo being pulled over by the police. While the actual scene with the cop offers one of the many gross-out gags in the movie, the biggest laugh comes from Harry’s response to the cop telling him to pull over.

It is an incredibly silly line that could have seemed too goofy in another movie, but it makes for a fitting play on words in a movie populated by such dim characters. It is hard not to laugh at the idea of Harry assuming the cop has his lights and siren on and pulls up to their window just to ask Harry about his fashion choices. It has become one of fans’ favorite Dumb and Dumber quotes.

11 “Kick His A**, Sea Bass!”

Sea Bass Friend (Sean Gildea)

Sea Bass' (Cam Neely) friends sitting at a diner table Dumb & Dumber.

To the people of Boston, Cam Neely will always be a hockey legend, finishing with a historic hockey career. For everyone else outside Massachusetts and the hockey world, he’s simply known as Sea Bass. It’s a cameo a select group can fully appreciate, but anyone who’s seen Dumb and Dumber knows Sea Bass for spitting in Harry’s burger after getting hit in the head with a salt shaker.

As Sea Bass approaches Harry and Lloyd’s table, one of his friends yells out this random line, which has become a fan-favorite, largely thanks to the unusual name of Sea Bass. It is one of those movie lines that does not seem like much and was likely not intended to make much of an impact. However, whether it is the idea of the man being called Sea Bass or the delivery of the actor who shouts it out, it is a line that has stuck with people.

10 “Just When I Think You Couldn’t Possibly Be Any Dumber…”

Harry (Jeff Daniels)

Harry (Jeff Daniels) angrily talking to Lloyd (Jim Carrey) in Dumb & Dumber.

Jeff Daniels has been in some impressive roles through the years, branching well outside of comedy. It is perhaps his talents as a dramatic actor that make it so effective when he delivers moments like this in Dumb and Dumber. After going their separate ways following Lloyd getting them lost, he comes by to pick up Harry on a small motorcycle he got after trading in their van. In light of this ridiculous trade, for the first time, it actually feels like Harry is about to lose his temper with Lloyd.

He sets the moment up as if he is getting ready to lay into Lloyd for making such a foolish decision. However, Harry then finishes it by saying:

you go and do something like this… and totally redeem yourself!”

It is a big laugh in the movie and also shows that these two are meant for each other. Harry might seem more clued in at times, but that only helps to sell the moment of him not recognizing that Lloyd went from one dumb move to another. The line has become a fun meme of celebration for people turning a bad situation around.

9 “So You’re Tellin’ Me There’s A Chance!”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Lloyd (Jim Carrey) talking to Mary (Lauren Holly) in Dumb & Dumber.

The entire journey of the movie is fueled by the idea that Lloyd has found the love of his life in Mary Swanson and goes to great lengths to find her. When he finally does, he makes a grand romantic appeal to her. In a nice rom-com plot twist, Mary proves to have no interest in a romance with Lloyd even after his misguided quest for love.

Lloyd started off this with a question about what the odds might be that she would be interested in a guy like him. While Mary is a nice person, at that moment, she was brutally honest in telling him that it would be one in a million. Never one to take a hint, Lloyd takes this as good news and that he still has a shot. The line is so funny that it has gone on to become a popular meme. It is as endearing as it is pathetic with Lloyd being too dumb to realize when he’s lost.

Jim Carrey and actor Lauren Holly, who plays Mary, were briefly married after the movie.

8 “If I Know Her As Well As I Think I Do, She’ll Invite Us Right In For Tea And Strumpets!”

Harry (Jeff Daniels)

Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) walking down the street in Dumb & Dumber.

Harry and Lloyd routinely got the wrong end of the stick, especially when it came to cultural references. That makes it all the more entertaining when they enter the high-society world of Mary and her friends, where they don’t fit in at all. When deciding on a plan for meeting Mary, Lloyd relies on an overabundance of confidence, even if it leaves him looking dumber than ever before.

Going off of Mary’s upper-class vibe, he suggests she will greet them as if she were a proper English lady, not realizing that he’s made some mistakes in his imagination of the reunion. A strumpet is a female prostitute, which is a far cry from his intended cultural reference regarding the inviting of guests in for tea and crumpets, where the original saying came from. Much like the Austrian confusion, it proves that Lloyd is always sure he has a great one-liner, even when he has no clue what he is talking about.

7 “We Got No Food! We Got No Jobs! Our Pet’s Heads Are Fallin’ Off!!”

Lloyd (Jim Carrey)

Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) pointing at something in Dumb & Dumber.

Given all the hijinks of the movie, fans might forget that Dumb and Dumber adds a crime story element. After Lloyd grabs Mary’s ransom money, he and Harry become embroiled in the conspiracy in a hilarious case of mistaken identity which is made even funnier when they continue not to realize it. After a couple of goons break into their apartment, they decide to send a little warning to Harry and Lloyd by cutting off their pet bird’s head.

The gruesome moment makes for one of the funniest moments as the death of the bird proves to be the last straw in Lloyd’s particularly bad day. Going on a rant about all the things that are going wrong with their life, Jim Carrey delivers the final point of their pets suddenly becoming decapitated for no reason with such unhinged frustration that it makes for a terrific moment of dark humor.

6 “Yeah, He Was Pretty Old.”

Harry (Jeff Daniels)

Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne, looking sad in Dumb and Dumber

While tearing the head off of their pet bird was supposed to serve as a message to Harry and Lloyd, the thugs who did this terrible crime didn’t count on the friends being too dim to get the message. When Lloyd returns home, Harry sadly tells him about the death of their bird and simply explains that his head fell off.

When Lloyd is shocked by this news, Harry explains that it was a pretty old bird as if age has anything to do with heads suddenly falling off. Seeing Harry so sad about the loss of his pet is hilariously juxtaposed with him saying something so clueless. It is hilarious to think of how Harry and Lloyd might react to the infamous horse head scene in The Godfather and how even a bloody message like that would likely be lost on the two.
